A woman in a blue shirt appears to be having a headache.

If you are one of the 90 percent of Americans who suffers from headaches, you know how horrible the pain can be. Whether you seem to get dull headaches that last the whole day through or sharp debilitating ones that give you waves of nausea, you know that relief can sometimes take what feels like a lifetime. Is the only solution to this problem pain medication? As it turns out, research has shown that chiropractic adjustments can treat tension headaches and ones that stem from our necks!

What Causes Headaches?

Unfortunately, headaches can come from a myriad of causes. Whether yours are coming from the food you eat, the weather, stress, blood sugar changes, insomnia, or whatever else the cause, they are never comfortable. About 5 percent of headaches are warning signs of an illness, while 95 percent of headaches are what’s called primary headaches – meaning, they do not stem from a  disease. Tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches are good examples of primary headaches, as they are the main concern. Most primary headaches are connected to muscle tension in your neck, which can be caused by sitting in front of a computer all day long, or from having poor posture.

What can I Do About my Headaches?

The good news is, there are steps you can take to prevent headaches in the future, as well as relieve any pain you may currently be experiencing. If you are someone who is stuck sitting down for long periods of time, do your best to stand up and stretch every half hour to one hour! Don’t forget to stretch your neck during this time, as it may be the most aggravated part of your body. Also, some moderate exercise can help with headache pain, such as walking. Any exercise that causes a throbbing headache should be avoided. Make sure you are hydrated all day long as well, and that you avoid clenching your jaw. Both tension and dehydration can quickly escalate into a headache.
